- Top functionaries exchange bitter letters
- “When did you turn secular, the word you hate,” asked Governor Koshyari
- Uddhav responds strongly referring to Ranaut episode
- Assaduddin and Prakash Ambedkar want places of worship thrown open
Exchange of bitter words between Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari and Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray full of sarcasm and innuendos has not surprised anyone. The acrimonious atmosphere has been going on between the Governor and the chief minister right from the day Uddhav Thackeray had taken oath of office. The heat in the correspondence has increased after Covid eruption. The question of opening the temples has been on top of the Governor’s mind. He wrote a letter to the CM asking him to announce opening of temples in Maharashtra.
Koshyari questioned the Hindutva credentials of Thackeray when he reminded the latter saying, “You have been a strong votary of Hindutva and openly espoused your devotion to Lord Ram by visiting Ayodhya.” The Governor commented that he wondered if the CM was receiving any divine premonition to keep the temples shut even after throwing open bars and restaurants. “Have you become secular, the term you hated, asked the Governor rather mischievously.
My definition of Hindutva different: Uddhav Thackeray
Uddhav Thackeray has given back to the Governor by telling him that he needed no certificate of Hindutva from Koshyari. Inviting a person who called Mumbai Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK), meaning Kangana Ranaut, is not part of his definition of Hindutva, Thackeray said. It is public knowledge that the famous actor had mounted a relentless attack against the chief minister at the behest of top BJP leadership. She was reportedly trying to help BJP to garner support in Bihar elections by espousing the cause of actor hailing from Bihar, Sushant Singh Rajput, who allegedly committed suicide in Mumbai.
Secularists ask for opening of places of worship
Thackeray asked if the Governor had forgotten the oath of office he had taken in the name of the Constitution. The reopening of the temples depends not on his belief in secularism but on the perception of the officials who are taking care of law and order. The CM commented that the sudden imposition of the lockdown by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was wrong. Political opponents of the chief minister such as Raj Thackeray, Assaduddin Owaisi and Prakash Ambedkar, the last two proclaimed secularists, have been demanding that the temples, mosques, churches and gurudwaras in Maharashtra be reopened. BJP has been organising protests against the continued closure of the places of worship.
